Model UMI is a plug-in module designed to identify and transmit the status of low voltage inputs and contact closures, and to control the operation of low-power actuators based on digital commands received over the powerline. The module communicates using the highly-reliable Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) technology. UPB devices such as Model UMI are easily integrated to provide a flexible, low-cost alternative to hardwired or RF home automation strategies.

Model UMI is useful for detecting events such as a ringing telephone or doorbell, or for monitoring alarm switches on doors and windows, or for sensing audio signals from a sound system. The outputs deliver on/off control for low-power electrical devices such as door strikes, drapery controls, central vacuum controls, electric fireplace actuators, garage door openers, sprinkler valves, etc. Installation is simple: the module is plugged into a standard 120VAC outlet and the devices to be monitored/controlled are wired into a terminal block on the bottom of the module. A non-controlled 120VAC outlet is also provided on the face of the module. Connected devices can be operated manually using a multi-button controller, or automatically via PC or home automation server.
